The area has specialist manufacturing sectors allied to its historic strengths in shipbuilding, as well as the largest concentration of caravan and mobile home manufacturers in the country. Tata Steel is the second largest steel producer in Europe and is in the top 10 globally of the steel producers worldwide, and employs around 4,000 people at its steelworks in Scunthorpe.
The region is similarly strong in manufacturing linked to healthcare technologies, with large, market leading companies located here including Smith and Nephew, RB (formerly Reckitt Benckiser) and Croda. The Humber is home to a number of specialist engineering institutions including; Brumby Engineering College, North Lindsey College,
Grimsby Institute and Hull Training’s Engineering Centre which provide practical training to support the needs of the advanced engineering sector, as well as the University of Hull with its Knowledge Exchange which supports innovation in engineering.
