The area has specialist manufacturing sectors allied to its historic strengths in shipbuilding, as well as the largest concentration of caravan and mobile home manufacturers in the country. Scunthorpe’s British Steel is one of the leading steel manufactures in Europe; producing 3 million tonnes of quality steel produce every year. 12,000 people are employed within the British Steel supply chain alone, with 10% of England’s manufacturing jobs based within Yorkshire and the Humber region.
The region is similarly strong in manufacturing linked to healthcare technologies, with large, market leading companies located here including Smith and Nephew, RB (formerly Reckitt Benckiser) and Croda. The Humber is home to a number of specialist engineering institutions including Grimsby Institute, Engineering UTC Northern Lincolnshire, Ron Dearing UTC, HETA and HOTA which provide practical training to support the needs of the advanced engineering sector, as well as the University of Hull with its Knowledge Exchange which supports innovation in engineering.
The Humber is home to Team Humber Marine Alliance (THMA), representing more than 200 innovative companies based within the region, whose combined comprehensive knowledge and experience in all areas of marine engineering makes THMA perfectly placed to deliver high quality projects in the international markets.
